Learning a Foreign Language is Good for Your Brain

The benefits of learning languages for children

Scientists in Sweden have used brain scans to study brain changes when people learn a foreign language. They found two groups of people, one group was new soldiers with language talent, and asked them to intensively study foreign languages such as Arabic and Russian; the other group was students studying medicine and cognitive science, and asked them to study hard, but did not learn a foreign language. The results of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI) showed that some areas of the brain of the language learning group grew significantly, while the other group did not change, which means that learning a foreign language is beneficial to the brain.

First of all, learning a language is a good exercise for the brain, because when people learn new words and grammar, many parts of the brain work simultaneously. For children, learning to speak a second foreign language can help them listen better, have a better memory, be more creative, have a stronger ability to solve complex problems, and have better cognitive flexibility, that is, flexibility ability to think.
