What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy. Not only are many expert studies supporting this therapy, but the actual application effect is also excellent. It is most commonly used to treat eating disorders, depression, or patients suffering from anxiety. Some doctors will suggest that cognitive behavioural therapy can be performed first for mild and moderate depression, and the effect may be more effective than taking antidepressant drugs. The following will introduce cognitive behavioral therapy in detail and compare it with traditional psychotherapy.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is fast and effective
Traditional psychotherapy mostly uses Freud’s psychoanalysis method to find out the root causes of psychological problems step by step. Therefore, examining and reviewing the past is a major focus, but this method requires long and repeated interviews. The process is not only time-consuming and expensive.
Although patients may still be able to let go of their psychological defences, realise their emotions, and achieve a state of awareness, the problem itself may not necessarily be resolved, because the emotional factors behind it may still exist.
On the contrary, cognitive behavioural therapy is not to review the past, but to focus on the present. The therapy is implemented by influencing the patient’s thoughts and changing inappropriate behaviour, which wants to be eradicated. It also makes cognitive behavioural therapy an important form of psychotherapy in modern times.
3 core concepts of cognitive behavioural therapy
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), the core concepts of cognitive behavioural therapy are the following three types:
-
- Psychological problems may come from wrong or negative thinking, which is the so-called cognitive distortion (Cognitive Distortion).
-
- The reason why patients have psychological problems may come from negative behaviour patterns learned in the past.
-
- People who suffer from mental illness can reduce their symptoms and get their lives back on track by learning better coping styles.
Common Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Practices
Cognitive behavioural therapy hopes to teach patients that although people cannot control everything around them, they can control their thoughts and help people cope with various situations by changing the way they interpret events. For example, a person who is not confident may be insecure about his appearance or ability, and even have negative thoughts, and gradually develop a negative thinking pattern, and begin to avoid social contact opportunities such as work or school.
Under normal circumstances, the psychologist will first do a functional analysis, ask the patient to find out the key points that cause him to lack self-confidence, and analyse them. However, this step is actually not easy for the patient. Once the patient becomes self-aware of this belief, the therapist can focus on the behaviour or belief to be changed, and teach the patient to apply techniques, such as people with drug addiction. As a person, the therapist does not directly order the patient to quit, but through some techniques, simulates the situation of his own drug addiction, and avoids or prevents it.
According to the theory of cognitive behavioural therapy, any trouble or problem is actually the meaning given to an event by people themselves. Although what has happened cannot be changed, our cognition and thoughts on this matter can still be changed. However, our cognition of things is easily affected by the inertial thinking mode, just like looking at the world through coloured glasses.
Therefore, the goal of behavioural cognitive therapy is to make people aware of the coloured glasses they wear, so that they can improve cognitive distortion and change their thinking mode.
Application of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
More than 50 years ago, psychologists began to use cognitive behavioural therapy to treat depression. However, cognitive behavioural therapy can be applied to many fields, from mental illness to reducing life stress, facing complex and difficult interpersonal relationships, and getting out of trauma. Pain and other difficulties in life can be dealt with.
Common illnesses or conditions for which CBT can be applied include: panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalised anxiety disorder, insomnia, various phobias, childhood depression, substance addiction (drugs), borderline personality disorder (BPD), eating disorders and other mental illnesses, even couple quarrels or general emotional problems, can all be improved through cognitive behavioural therapy to prevent stress from causing more serious problems.
According to the British Association for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the basis of cognitive behavioural therapy is to establish a model of the individual’s emotions and behaviours. The treatment methods are quite diverse, and even patients can self-treat. Here are four common types of cognitive behavioural therapy:
-
- Rational Emotional Behaviour Therapy
The goal of this method is to identify and change patients’ irrational beliefs. By constantly challenging these beliefs, patients will eventually discover their own problems and change their beliefs. - Cognitive Therapy
Focuses on identifying and changing incorrect or distorted thought patterns, emotional responses, or behaviours. - Multimodal Treatment
This mode is a comprehensive treatment that takes into account that different individuals may face different situations, and interprets and treats personality on 7 levels, and these 7 levels are: Behaviour, Affective Processes, Sensation, Images, Cognition, Interpersonal Relationships and Drug / Biological Function, referred to as BASIC I.D. - Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
This type of cognitive behavioural therapy can mainly deal with people’s thinking patterns, and combines the concepts of emotional control and mindfulness meditation (living in the present) to help patients solve psychological problems. It can be mainly used in suicide prevention or treatment of borderline personality patient.
