Description
D-Mannose is a popular health care related to urinary tract infections alongside cranberries and probiotics supplement D-Mannose is a monosaccharide structurally related to glucose, involved in numerous metabolic processes, especially in the glycosylation of certain proteins, and plays an important role in many tissues and organs. In nature, it exists in animals, plants and microorganisms. Some fruits and vegetables contain small amounts of D-mannose, including: cranberries, apples, oranges, peaches, cauliflower, green beans
Benefit of D-Mannose
- D-Mannose relieves urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infection is an umbrella term that describes any infection involving any part of the urinary tract, such as the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Adult women are 30 times more likely than men to develop a UTI (annual incidence rate of 10.8%), and 60% of women have at least one disease in their lifetime. Associated risk factors include sexual activity, use of urinary catheters or spermicides, and a history of recurrent urinary tract infections. Oral D-mannose can significantly improve most symptoms such as dysuria, frequent urination, urgency, pubic pain, tenesmus, nocturia and quality of life. - D-Mannose reduces the chance of recurrent urinary tract infections
Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections were defined as 2 episodes of acute bacterial cystitis with associated symptoms within the past 6 months, or 3 episodes within the past 1 year. Recurrent urethritis is more common in women. The estimated lifetime prevalence of symptomatic UTIs in women is over 50%, with approximately 26% of women relapsed at 6-month follow-up after initial treatment. Most recurrent urethritis has no long-term sequelae and can fully recover. Some factors associated with poor prognosis may include: age, recent urinary tract testing, recent hospitalization or antibiotic treatment, previous diabetes, sickle cell anemia, or chronic kidney disease. D-Mannose has protective effect on recurrent urinary tract infection, its effect can be compared with antibiotics. - Has prebiotic properties
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations currently defines a prebiotic as “a food ingredient that selectively stimulates the growth or activation of one or several bacteria in the colon, thereby having a beneficial effect on the host”. Fruits, vegetables, grains and other edible plants are potential sources of prebiotics. Other common synthetic sources are: galacto-oligosaccharides, fructooligosaccharides, soybean oligosaccharides, inulin, cyclodextrins, glucose oligosaccharides Sugar, xylo-oligosaccharides, lactulose, lactosucrose, isomalt-oligosaccharides. D-Mannose Has Prebiotic Effects, May Help With Gut Health - Help lose weight
Obesity is defined as the abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can be harmful to health, mainly due to poor diet and lack of physical activity, and involves interactions between genetics, hormones and the environment. The global prevalence of obesity has continued to rise over the past few decades, so it is considered an epidemic. According to the World Health Organization, by 2035, 39% of people in today’s society will be affected by obesity.
Possible Side Effects
D-Mannose is safe in appropriate doses for most healthy adults, but side effects or adverse reactions have been reported: diarrhea, loose stools, stomach pain, dizziness, loss of appetite, tiredness, and bloating, especially in large doses.
Safety Consideration
1. Not to be used by pregnant and lactating women (due to unknown safety)
2. Long-term intake of high doses may cause kidney damage
3. Although D-mannose may be beneficial for urinary tract infections, the current evidence is not very strong, and people with related diseases should still consult a doctor first to avoid delaying the condition.
4. Since D-Mannose is a form of sugar (which may stimulate insulin secretion), please use it with caution in people with diabetes or those taking hypoglycemic drugs, and monitor blood sugar regularly
5. Do not use with antibiotics: Pradimicin may affect the efficacy of the drug
6. Patients with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) have a higher chance of side effects after use, please pay attention
7. Those who have been allergic to grains or fruits, please use it with caution, as it may induce allergic reactions
