Description
Taurine is the most abundant thiamine-containing amino acid in mammalian body tissues (roughly present in the brain, immune cells, retina and viscera), and is regarded as a conditionally essential amino acid. Its physiological functions include: regulation of cell osmotic pressure, formation of bile salts, regulation of calcium flow, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory and cell membrane stabilization. Although taurine is not required for protein formation, it is required in large amounts to meet the body’s needs under certain conditions (such as premature babies, chronic liver disease, heart or kidney failure). The human body produces a small amount of taurine, and most of it is ingested through food. Natural sources include meat, poultry, dairy products and other foods. Plant sources are less common.
Benefit of Taurine
- Good for heart failure
Heart failure is often caused by abnormal myocardial structure or function, resulting in the inability of the ventricle to efficiently fill and output blood. It mainly occurs in the elderly, coronary heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. The main symptoms are frequent shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, and swollen veins in the feet, legs, abdomen and neck. Taurine supplementation helps to improve myocardial oxygen consumption, ECG indicators, exercise capacity and increase blood taurine levels - Beneficial for hepatitis symptoms
Hepatitis generally refers to the sudden or chronic inflammation of the liver due to factors such as viruses, drugs, toxins, alcohol or immune disorders, especially hepatitis B and C, which are transmitted by blood viruses. Fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. Taking taurine can help improve liver damage index (ALT and AST), oxidative stress index (thiobarbituric acid relative substances) and blood lipids (cholesterol and triglyceride). - Reduce the incidence of stroke
Stroke is the number one cause of disability. After the age of 55, the incidence increases exponentially every 10 years. It is estimated that there are about 800,000 strokes in the United States each year, of which 600,000 are first-time occurrences. Factors include hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes and smoking. The blood taurine value of never-smokers has an inverse relationship with stroke events, indicating that taurine can bring benefits to some groups, especially the non-smoker. - Blood lipid lowering
Hyperlipidemia is the most common abnormal condition found in health examinations, and it is also the primary pathogenic factor that causes atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. It is estimated that about 11.7% of the 20 to 39-year-old age group have cholesterol problems, and it is more obvious after the age of 40, rising to 41.2%. Because there is no obvious discomfort, about half of the patients have not taken appropriate treatment, resulting in cardiovascular disease in the future. In addition to reducing triacylglycerol and atherosclerosis index (TC/HDL ratio), oral taurine can also reduce body weight. - Reduce chemotherapy side effects
Chemotherapy is the most common treatment method for cancer, but during the treatment, side effects and toxicity to specific organs may occur, which often reduces patient cooperation and hinders the progress of treatment. The most common side effects of chemotherapy are nausea and vomiting. Depending on the degree, malnutrition, dehydration, and electrolyte metabolism imbalance may occur. In addition to helping reduce nausea, vomiting, or smell and taste disturbances caused by chemotherapy, taurine supplementation also reduces fatigue.
Possible Side Effects
Taurine is a very safe ingredient for most people when used in appropriate doses, without any significant side effects. If you want to supplement taurine due to various medical conditions, it is recommended to consult local qualified medical personnel before use. The intake of nutrients from natural diets is still the first priority.
