Description
Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is a member of the vitamin B group. It is mainly a coenzyme of five carboxylases in the human body. It is an indispensable nutrient in the process of fatty acid synthesis, glycogenesis, and amino acid decomposition. It is used to generate energy which is very important.
Biotin also regulates immune function and plays a role in antibody production, lymphocyte differentiation, normal function of macrophages and natural killer cells
In addition to this, current evidence points to an important role for biotin in gene expression and chromosome structure. To date, approximately 2000 biotin-dependent genes have been identified that play a role in the transcriptional repression of genes, including both gene regulation and genome stability.
Possible symptoms of biotin deficiency include: thinning hair, hair loss all over the body, brittle nails, dry eyes, eczematous rash, seborrheic dermatitis, conjunctivitis, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and various neurological symptoms such as: depression, lethargy, hypotonia, seizures, numbness and tingling in the extremities, mental retardation, developmental delays in children, etc.
Biotin Deficiency
- Patients receiving long-term intravenous nutrition and enteral nutrition.
- Long-term use of anti-seizure drugs (such as valproic acid).
- Long-term antibiotic use (because it destroys biotin-producing bacteria in the gut).
- Inflammation of the gut such as Crohn’s diseas that makes it difficult for the gut to absorb nutrients.
- Excessive exposure to alcohol (alcoholism) inhibits biotin absorption.
- Excessive dieting.
- Unbalanced diet such as excessive intake of processed foods.
Natural foods that contain biotin?
Biotin comes from a wide variety of sources, including egg yolks, brewer’s yeast, nuts (especially almonds, peanuts, walnuts), beans, whole grains, mushrooms, bananas, cauliflower, fish, organ meats, dairy products, seafood, etc. However, we may not have above foods all the time. Hence biotin supplement can help you to ensure sufficient biotin.
Benefit of Biotin
- Improve hair loss
Hair loss is a health concern for many people, related to appearance and self-confidence, it is estimated that nearly 50% of men and women are affected by different patterns of hair loss. Nutrient deficiencies are often associated with chronic telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, female pattern baldness, and patchy alopecia. Biotin benefits hair growth and strengthens hair. - Good for multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a common and disabling multifocal disease of the central nervous system, pathologically characterized by perivenous inflammatory cell infiltration, demyelination, axonal transection, and neuronal degeneration and gliosis. Once progressive disability is identified, there are currently no therapies available to protect, repair, or regenerate neural tissue to restore neurological function. Common clinical manifestations of patients include: motor weakness with progressive paralysis, sensory dysfunction, bladder/bowel dysfunction, coordination. High-dose biotin adjunctive therapy (300 mg daily for 12 to 15 months) favors improvement in 25-foot walk time. - Beneficial for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by upper motor neurons in the primary motor cortex and lower motor neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord transsexual. Initial symptoms include muscle wasting and weakness. Subsequently, voluntary and respiratory muscle paralysis develops. About 50% of people with ALS die within 30 months of onset of symptoms, usually from respiratory insufficiency, while about 10% may survive for more than 10 years. Results of biotin treatment is satifactory. - Improve brittle nails
Brittle nail disease is a structural abnormality of the nails. The main symptoms are the loss of elasticity and softness of the nails, accompanied by cracking, peeling and crushing. It is estimated that about 20% of the population is affected by this disease, and the incidence of females is 2 times more than male. Brittle nails are usually idiopathic and may be caused by skin or systemic disorders, nutritional deficiencies, and trauma due to some drug use. Human studies have also found that biotin supplementation can help improve brittle nails - Improve diabetes
Diabetes is one of the oldest diseases in human history. It was first discovered in ancient Egypt, 3,000 years ago. The main causative factors of diabetes are related to genes and life factors, such as lack of exercise, sedentary, smoking and drinking. Among them, obesity accounts for about 55% and is the most common causative factor. A study found that people with diabetes generally have lower blood biotin concentrations than healthy people, and that supplementation can help improve fasting blood glucose values. Additional use of chromium and biotin can have better glucose control (improvement of glycated hemoglobin and fasting blood glucose). Combined use of biotin and chromium makes blood sugar control more efficient.
Possible Side Effects
Biotin is a very safe nutrient, safe in most cases with no side effects, studies have used ultra-high doses of 100 mg to 600 mg for several months with no adverse effects (due to its water-soluble properties, excess is excreted in urine). But there isn’t enough research to confirm all the side effects of taking too much biotin.
