What is 5-HTP?

The health food 5-HTP is one of the sources of serotonin. By helping the body synthesize serotonin, it can help with depression symptoms, help sleep, reduce anxiety and panic, and also have some weight loss effects. “Serotonin” is also commonly known as the happiness hormone and happiness factor. What Dr. Berg Said About 5-HTP

5-HTP is short for “5-hydroxytryptophan” and is one of the important sources of serotonin. Serotonin is also known as “5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT”, and the close relationship between the two components can be known from the name.

The body produces serotonin: food → protein → tryptophan → 5-HTP → serotonin.  Nutrient intake through diet, through a series of metabolic pathways, can produce serotonin needed to maintain physical and mental health. Moreover, because the structure of 5-HTP is very close to serotonin, it is more efficient to produce serotonin than to ingest protein and tryptophan.

The main effect of 5-HTP is to increase serotonin, improve depression, and relieve mood. Because of the close relationship between depression and insomnia, some mild insomnia symptoms, antidepressants can provide a good effect. 5-HTP is also often used as a health food to help sleep and improve sleep quality.

In one experiment, 24 subjects were given 200 mg of 5-HTP and simulated a panic situation (stimulated by carbon dioxide) and found that 5-HTP reduced the panic response. It has also been confirmed that “panic mood” is related to serotonin. When serotonin is deficient, panic is more likely to occur. Another study showed that in children prone to nightmares, taking 5-HTP before bed for 20 days improved their nightmares. And 6 months after the end of the experiment, 83.9% still indicated that nightmares were significantly reduced.

In an experiment, 20 obese women were given 40 mg of 5-HTP 5 times a day for 4 weeks, and it was found that 5-HTP had the effect of increasing satiety and weight loss. The weight loss principle of 5-HTP may come from increasing the serotonin in the “gastrointestinal tract” and reducing the appetite for “carbohydrates”.

Take 1 capsule daily, preferably on an empty stomach at bedtime.
